HOW CROW BECAME BLACK
A Yokuts story as retold by Nadi Spencer
A long, long time ago Falcon and Crow lived together in the sky.
They were, at times, mistaken for each other because they looked very much alike.
Then, one day, Falcon had an idea.
He told Crow to help him gather sticks.
They would build a net.
To catch Night Sky.
So Falcon and Crow built a net and carried it into the air.
They waited.
When Night Sky arrived she did not see the net.
She rolled right into it.
Quickly, Falcon grabbed Night and rolled her up in a ball.
He rubbed her all over Crow’s body.
Crow then shined with all the colors of Night.
And has remained black since then.
